About PlainRent

PlainRent makes it easy to look up official Fair Market Rents (FMRs) for any county or metropolitan area in the United States. Our data comes directly from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

What Are Fair Market Rents?

Fair Market Rents are estimates of the 40th percentile of gross rents for standard quality units in a given area. HUD publishes FMRs annually for every county and metropolitan area in the US.

FMRs are used to determine payment standards for the Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8), rent ceilings for HOME and Emergency Solutions Grants, and maximum rents for Continuum of Care programs.

Our Data

PlainRent covers over 3,100 counties and 400 metropolitan areas across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. We include FMR data for studio through 4-bedroom units, with year-over-year comparisons where available.

Data Source

All rent data is sourced from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Fair Market Rent documentation system. PlainRent is not affiliated with or endorsed by HUD or any government agency.
